The exterior and interior views of the segmented wood bowl
pictured above is an example of this artist's desire to create beautiful bowls
with a life of their own, able to express themselves independently of the artist
himself, who can only be responsible for their origin.
This artist enjoys bringing these wood vessels into being,
turning them loose into the world so they may find their own place and carry
their own sense of purpose. They are named in a minimal way, according to their
specie and then sequentially numbered for the simple purpose of distinguishing
one from another. In this way, the observer has the freedom to allow the bowls
to speak in personal ways, ways the artist could never dream of.
No paints, pigments or stains of any kind are used, except in
the maple bowls where the glue is tinted red. Otherwise, all colors are the
natural colors of the woods themselves. A large segmented bowl can consist of as
many as 5,000 small segments of wood and the smaller ones up to 2,000 segments.
As you browse through examples of the turned vessels on the
following page, you will see the variety of exotic wood species used to create
these segmented bowls. Click on the thumbnails to enjoy an enlarged view of
bowls; it is well worth the wait.
Modern artistic figure skating expresses intense efforts of the performers to free themselves from the bounds of everyday human motion, to spin ethereally through the air, forever straining against gravity. There seems to be an illustration of the human spirit straining against the limitations of the body. Many of these segmented wooden bowls seem to capture the same electric vibrancy of a skater's motion with their intricate designs reflecting the human spirit straining against its limitations.
